At Trent Primary School, our Reception class provides a nurturing, inspiring and language-rich environment where every child is known, valued and encouraged to flourish. We understand that the Early Years Foundation Stage is the beginning of a child’s educational journey, and we are committed to giving every child the very best start.

Our carefully planned EYFS curriculum provides a balance of high-quality adult-led teaching, purposeful play and rich opportunities for exploration and discovery. Through the seven areas of learning, children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to become confident, curious and enthusiastic learners. We place a strong emphasis on developing the foundational skills that underpin future success, including communication and language, listening and attention, early reading, writing, mathematical understanding, physical development and the ability to manage themselves and their relationships with others.

We know that children learn best when they feel safe, secure and emotionally supported. Our nurturing approach enables children to develop confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning. We carefully build on each child’s starting points, interests and experiences, using our knowledge of the children to provide appropriate challenge and support. Through meaningful interactions, high-quality questioning, stories, conversations and shared experiences, we continually extend children's vocabulary, knowledge and thinking.

Developing independence is at the heart of our Reception provision. Children are encouraged to make choices, take responsibility, solve problems, persevere when things are difficult and have pride in what they achieve. We nurture children who are willing to have a go, learn from mistakes and embrace new challenges. Alongside developing their foundational knowledge and skills, children develop the learning behaviours and independence they need to become successful lifelong learners.

Relationships are equally important. We create a strong sense of belonging where children learn to be kind, respectful, thoughtful and considerate of others. Through play, collaboration and shared experiences, children develop the social and emotional skills they need to form secure relationships, work successfully with others and build strong, happy and long-lasting friendships.

We work closely with families to ensure that children’s learning and development are understood, celebrated and supported. Through ongoing observation and assessment, we identify children’s individual next steps and provide experiences that enable them to make meaningful progress from their starting points.

By the end of Reception, our ambition is for every child to be a confident, capable and independent learner, with strong foundational knowledge and skills on which to build throughout their education. We want our children to leave Reception with a genuine love of learning, a strong sense of self, positive relationships and the confidence and resilience to embrace whatever comes next. They will be ready to take on the next stage of their learning journey with curiosity, independence and enthusiasm.
